I had been sailing through the Galapagos for the last 10 days. I had been out in the middle of the ocean, seeing the wildest of things. Iguanas that swim in the water, sea lions that came up with a friendly hello, fish of all shapes and sizes, a unique and extreme land.

It was during the time of Covid, and we had to test to go home. I tested positive for Covid. I didn’t feel too badly, and after quarantining for a few days, I was back to negative. (Only one other person on the ship of 20 also tested positive. Interesting.) I had changed my flight, and I had a week left. What should I do?

People always ask me what is the key to traveling alone? Do you plan or do you go with the flow? The answer is both. I had no idea what I would do, so I began to research. Amongst my search, I found the Bamboo Lodge in the Cuyabeno Rainforest of Ecuador. Something about the place kept calling me. And I’m glad I answered the call.

I had to work to get there. At the airport, my flight was canceled, and there were no other flights there that day. It was on the other side of Ecuador from keto. I had no contacts except the ones I just made. I stuck to it, and I ended up , with a very fair priced private ride to the town of Lago Agrio where I’d planned to stay for the night for an early departure into the rainforest.

All the work had been worth it.

Being in the Amazon is like stepping back in time. Floating along the channels on a long canoe, animals of every shape and size, birds, fish, people living and simplicity off the land, towering trees, river dolphins, monkeys. The black night carpeted with stars, the creatures of the night. It was alive. It was wild. It was nature shed of most human influence.

Bamboo Lodge did a great job with accommodation, the most excellent food, and very knowledgeable guides. I would highly recommend staying here and having this experience. Make sure to see the sunrise at Laguna Grande. It is a moment of intense beauty I will never forget.
